| 175 Years of U.S./Thai Relations |
| March 20, 2008 marks the 175th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between His Majesty the Magnificent King of Siam and the United States of America. This was the U.S.’s first treaty with an Asian nation, and provided that the citizens of each nation '...shall, with sincerity, hold commercial intercourse in the Ports of their respective nations, as long as Heaven and Earth shall endure.' AMCHAM was pleased to participate with the U.S. Embassy in a series of events to mark this occasion including the presentation of the first 10 of 175 English Teaching Toolkits to teachers in Chiang Mai on March 18th and a luncheon featuring H.E. Prime Minister Samak on March 20th. The AMCHAM Thailand Charitable Foundation plans to award 175 Student Scholarships in honor or this anniversary, and AMCHAM will match all funds donated to the Foundation in Marcy by 75%. Additionally, AMCHAM announced a donation of Baht 1.75 million to the AMCHAM Thailand Charitable Foundation to assist with its Student Scholarship and Adopt-a-School programs. | Customs Best Practices Workshop |
AMCHAM was pleased to co-host a day-long best practices seminar with the Royal Thai Customs Department on November 21 at the Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel. The event brought together major American companies operating in Thailand and key Customs policy makers to develop a better understanding of the wide-ranging operations and processes of the Customs Department. Thanks to event sponsors Diageo, Ernst & Young, Federal Express, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Philip Morris and PriceWaterhouseCoopers.
